Fall 2003 Game 4 (1-1)

It was the kind of game the Fox Television Network would have been happy to have. But unlike those exhilarating and seemingly endless baseball playoff games that kept the nation riveted to the tube and bleary eyed from late night finishes, Saturday’s U11 game between the Gold Rush and Blue Tide had no winners or losers, ending in a third straight tie for the Gold Rush who extended their multi year unbeaten streak to 16.

Like the Yankees-Red Sox series the game had back and forth action, momentum swings and evenness. No Aaron Boone stepped forward to save the Gold Rush who were unable to hold two one goal leads and settled for the 2-2 deadlock against the much larger Blue Tide at soggy Memorial Field.

Although the weather was sunny, a light rain the previous night was enough to drench the poor draining field and greatly affect the way the game was played. Many times shots or clearing passes got stuck in the water and didn’t reach intended targets.

Brooke Bergenfeld skillfully braved the elements to take a beautifully timed pass from Amanda Rodriguez and then calmly outmaneuver a defender and the goalie to score from ten yards out in the first half. It was the only goal during the first half as goalies Eve Rosenheck and Christine Murphy made several fine saves.

The second half saw the bulk of the scoring as Rodriguez broke a 1-1 tie with a hard shot through a maze of players in front of the goal for her second tally in the last two games. The lead was short lived as the Tide mounted pressure which finally resulted in a tying goal.

Goalies Rosenheck and Murphy were aided by the fine defensive play of fullbacks Donna Amore, Lazarus and Christina Bobyack and sweeper. Jessica Moore.

The five halfback alignment of Caoimhe Harold , Allison Staniec Christine Murphy
Laura Wright, Brooke Bergenfeld, Rodriguez, Erica Tropp Anna McGuinness and Alyssa Laki were skillful in creating scoring chances and dropping back to aid the defense. The line play of Isabel Crystal kept the pressure on the opposition.

The Gold Rush have a bye on October 25 and will next play November 1.
