Spring 2003- Game 4

Like the Tom Petty song, for the Scotch Plains U11 girls soccer team, the Gold Rush the waiting is the hardest part. After completing the regular season part of their schedule with a tidy 4-0 win over the Green Machine, Saturday May 17 at Terrill Middle School, the
Gold Rush now wait four weeks until June 14 before they play another game.

Having clinched first place the week before, the Gold rush were able to move personnel around on yet another cold blustery day after jumping to a quick 3-0 lead, two on goals by Laura Toffolo, and the first goal of the season by Nikki Hodulik. Goalies Katie Gartner, Eve Rosenheck,Christina Bobyack and Amanda Rodriguez barely touched the ball
and Toffolo completed her hat trick with a second half goal. She passed Gina Pelosi for the team lead with six goals. Including last fall, the Gold Rush are now 11-0-1 with 45 goals scored and 4 given up.

With sweeper Shannon Reimers out for a second game, Caitlin Hoynes-O’Connor once again ably filled in along with Sarah Lazarus,Neha Pannuri, Bobyack. and Jessica Moore. Pelosi,Rodriguez,Toffolo and Allison Staniec dominated at halfback. Toni Ann Gattozzi just missed scoring several goals and worked some fine passing plays.

Spring 2003 -Game 3

The Scotch Plains U11 girls soccer team, the Gold Rush met their rivals the Orange Crush for the first time since last falls’ championship game and for the third straight
time the Gold Rush were 2-0 winners. Unlike the exciting championship game that was not decided until the final five minutes this one was decided by goals midway through each half. The victory assured the Gold Rush a first place finish in the regular season and a bye in the first week of the playoffs, slated for June 7.

Laura Toffolo tallied her third goal of the spring on a fine setup from Toni Ann Gattozzi.
Pelosi finsihed the scoring midway through the second half when she drove a hard low right footed shot from 10 yards.

Missing their star sweeper, Shannon Reimers, the Gold Rush were fortunate to have the versatile Caitlin Hoynes-O’Connor to fill in flawlessly. Katie Gartner and Eve Rosenheck shared the goal keeping duties and were well protected by the other defenders, fullbacks
Neha Pannuri,Sarah Lazarus and Jessica Moore. Amanda Rodriguez, who scored the game winning goal in last November’s championship match was all over the field from her halfback position and combined with pelosi,Toffolo and Gattozzi to dominate midfield. Allison Staniec, Christine Murphy, Nikki Hodulik and Christina Bobyack sparkled with their passing mostly from offensive positions.

After concluding their regular season on May 17, the Gold Rush will not play for four weeks.

Spring 2003-First two games

For the Gold Rush the long wait was worth it.
It took nearly six months since they last played on November 3
to finally play a game on Thursday, May 1 and then in the space of 36 hours they had to play another one but the defending Scotch Plains U11 Girls’ champions, in new green uniforms showed they will be tough to dethrone with two victories.

Their opener against the Maroon Marauders was a breeze as they scored early and often in a 6-1 victory. Christine Murphy got the season off to a quick start when she alertly kicked in a Laura Toffolo shot and then Gina Pelosi and Toffolo erupted for two goals apiece sandwiched around a tally
by Caitlin Hoynes-O’Connor to pad the lead to 6-0 before halftime.

Liberal substitutions kept the score down in the second half as many players shared goal keeping duties. The second game was much more difficult. Playing the Red Storm, the only team to blemish their fall record with a tie, the Gold Rush expected a tough game.

Pelosi got them off to a 1-0 lead with a beautiful swerving shot from a tough angle but the Storm came to tie the game just before halftime. Despite having the better of the play the Gold Rush was only able to tally once as Pelosi scored on a similar shot on a nice feed from Toni Ann Gattozzi.

Katie Gartner, whose goalie talents were not needed in the first game, played most of the second game and has yet to yield a goal. The defense of Sweeper Shannon Reimers and fullbacks Sarah Lazarus, Neha Pannuri, Jessica Moore and Christina Bobyack were effective in protecting the goal while halfbacks Amanda Rodriguez, Toffolo,Gattozzi, Pelosi and Hoynes-O’Connor excelled on both ends of the field. The line players Eve Rosenheck,Murphy, Allison Staniec and Nikki Hodulik were skillful in their passing and shooting.

The Gold rush’s next game against the Green Machine is a rematch of last fall’s championship.
