Fall 2003 Game 6 (1-0)

One week after having their multi year unbeaten streak snapped the Gold Rush, a Scotch Plains U11 girls soccer team rebounded with the type of defensive performance that had been responsible for their success and apparently catapulted themselves back into the playoffs with a 1-0 upset win over the first place Red Storm Saturday at Park Middle School.

Goalies Eve Rosenheck and Jessica Moore combined for the shutout and were greatly aided by a game saving play by fullback Sarah Lazarus who kicked what would have been the tying goal out of the goal in the game’s waning minutes. Caoimhe Harold scored the only goal of the game when she took Christine Murphy’s flick of an Isabel Crystal corner kick and deposited a hard low shot past the goalie ten minutes into the second half.

With Memorial Field once again unplayable the teams used the spacious confines of a Park Middle School field that had been used for a High School state tournament game the day before. It required considerable extra running for the Gold Rush halfbacks Harold , Brooke Bergenfeld,Allison Staniec, Alyssa Laki, Anna McGuinness and Amanda Rodriguez. The fullback corps of Lazarus, Christina Bobyack,Moore, Laura Wright, Jaclyn Friedman and Donna Amore were unyielding.

Fall 2003 Game 5 (0-2)

All streaks must eventually come to an end. On the day that the Miami Hurricane football team lost it’s first regular season in almost four years, the Gold Rush U11 Girls Soccer of Scotch Plains saw its more modest unbeaten streak end in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Silver Streaks at Terrill Middle School. The loss dropped the Gold Rush’s record to 1-1-3 and we their first loss since Spring 2002 totaling 21 games.

The game, which was switched from water logged Memorial Field, started slowly as befits a game the day after Halloween. The Streaks pressured the Gold Rush goal until they eventually scored the game’s first goal. The Gold Rush who had won two tough games against the Streaks the year before fought back gamely but the Streaks’ defense was too tough.

In the second half there were numerous chances for both teams before the Streaks pushed through an insurance goal with ten minutes left. The Gold Rush never quit but were unable to penetrate the solid Silver Streaks defense.

With regular goalie Eve Rosenheck missing. Jessica Moore, Christine Murphy and Sarah Lazarus filled in at goal with Murphy doing the bulk of the work.

They were abetted by the defense of fullbacks Donna Amore, Lazarus, Christina Bobyack, Moore and Jaclyn Friedman and defensive halfbacks Erica Tropp, and Anna McGuinness.

Halfbacks Laura Wright Caoimhe Harold ,Brooke Bergenfeld and Amanda Rodriguez played tirelessly in midfield. Allison Staniec, Alyssa Laki and Isabel Crystal guided the offense.

With their playoff hopes diminished the Gold Rush end their regular season Saturday with a must win game against the Orange Crush.

Fall 2003 Game 4 (1-1)

It was the kind of game the Fox Television Network would have been happy to have. But unlike those exhilarating and seemingly endless baseball playoff games that kept the nation riveted to the tube and bleary eyed from late night finishes, Saturday’s U11 game between the Gold Rush and Blue Tide had no winners or losers, ending in a third straight tie for the Gold Rush who extended their multi year unbeaten streak to 16.

Like the Yankees-Red Sox series the game had back and forth action, momentum swings and evenness. No Aaron Boone stepped forward to save the Gold Rush who were unable to hold two one goal leads and settled for the 2-2 deadlock against the much larger Blue Tide at soggy Memorial Field.

Although the weather was sunny, a light rain the previous night was enough to drench the poor draining field and greatly affect the way the game was played. Many times shots or clearing passes got stuck in the water and didn’t reach intended targets.

Brooke Bergenfeld skillfully braved the elements to take a beautifully timed pass from Amanda Rodriguez and then calmly outmaneuver a defender and the goalie to score from ten yards out in the first half. It was the only goal during the first half as goalies Eve Rosenheck and Christine Murphy made several fine saves.

The second half saw the bulk of the scoring as Rodriguez broke a 1-1 tie with a hard shot through a maze of players in front of the goal for her second tally in the last two games. The lead was short lived as the Tide mounted pressure which finally resulted in a tying goal.

Goalies Rosenheck and Murphy were aided by the fine defensive play of fullbacks Donna Amore, Lazarus and Christina Bobyack and sweeper. Jessica Moore.

The five halfback alignment of Caoimhe Harold , Allison Staniec Christine Murphy
Laura Wright, Brooke Bergenfeld, Rodriguez, Erica Tropp Anna McGuinness and Alyssa Laki were skillful in creating scoring chances and dropping back to aid the defense. The line play of Isabel Crystal kept the pressure on the opposition.

The Gold Rush have a bye on October 25 and will next play November 1.
