Fall 2003- Playoffs two victories

Shrugging off the disappointment of missing the playoffs by a mere goal, the Scotch Plains U11 team, the Gold Rush finished their season with a flourish winning two games on Saturday November 16 to sweep the consolation section and finish third as the fall season came to a close.

Despite having identical records, the White Tigers were awarded the final playoff spot by virtue of giving up one less goal. After the White Tigers were eliminated by the Red Storm in the day’s first game, the Gold Rush went to work and defeated the Green Machine for the second time this season by the same 2-0 score they had won by when the teams opened the season in September. And like the first game, Laura Wright and Brooke Bergenfeld were again the goal scorers.

Wright connected in the first half after a nifty passing sequence that started with an Isabel Crystal pass to Caoimhe Harold whose feed to an open Wright resulted in a fine shot into the corner of the net. Despite dominating play the Gold Rush were kept off the board by brilliant goalkeeping by Melissa McKenna. Goalie Eve Rosenheck kept the Gold Rush in the lead by stopping a penalty kick near the end of the first half.

McKenna continued to dazzle the Gold Rush with one save after another before Begenfeld gave them breathing room with a high hard shot after breaking through the defense. Jessica Moore played the second half in goal to complete the shutout.

A little over an hour later the Gold Rush were back on the field to face the White Tigers in the battle for third place. Isabel Crystal opened the scoring by taking a pass from Amanda Rodriguez and depositing a hard shot into the corner. Rodriguez provided the margin of victory by taking a pass from Harold and hitting a low shot into the goal. The White tigers fought back with a goal before the end of the half but Moore and a stingy defense held on to the slight margin throughout the second half and the Gold Rush were able to celebrate the end of a 4-1-3 season that extended their two year record to 16-2-4.

Their only loss was to the Silver Streaks and the Gold Rush were the only team to beat the Red Storm who defended their league championship with a 1-0 victory over the Streaks.

The goalies Rosenheck and Moore were helped by the consistent defensive play of Donna Amore, Christina Bobyack, Sarah Lazarus, Jaclyn Friedman and Wright.
Halfbacks and line players Rodriguez, Harold, Crystal, Bergenfeld, Allison Staniec, Alyssa Laki, Anna McGuinness and Christine Murphy controlled the midfield and offensive area.

Unlike previous weeks when games had to cancelled Memorial field held up wonderfully through five games in 6 hours.
