Spring 2003-First two games

For the Gold Rush the long wait was worth it.
It took nearly six months since they last played on November 3
to finally play a game on Thursday, May 1 and then in the space of 36 hours they had to play another one but the defending Scotch Plains U11 Girls’ champions, in new green uniforms showed they will be tough to dethrone with two victories.

Their opener against the Maroon Marauders was a breeze as they scored early and often in a 6-1 victory. Christine Murphy got the season off to a quick start when she alertly kicked in a Laura Toffolo shot and then Gina Pelosi and Toffolo erupted for two goals apiece sandwiched around a tally
by Caitlin Hoynes-O’Connor to pad the lead to 6-0 before halftime.

Liberal substitutions kept the score down in the second half as many players shared goal keeping duties. The second game was much more difficult. Playing the Red Storm, the only team to blemish their fall record with a tie, the Gold Rush expected a tough game.

Pelosi got them off to a 1-0 lead with a beautiful swerving shot from a tough angle but the Storm came to tie the game just before halftime. Despite having the better of the play the Gold Rush was only able to tally once as Pelosi scored on a similar shot on a nice feed from Toni Ann Gattozzi.

Katie Gartner, whose goalie talents were not needed in the first game, played most of the second game and has yet to yield a goal. The defense of Sweeper Shannon Reimers and fullbacks Sarah Lazarus, Neha Pannuri, Jessica Moore and Christina Bobyack were effective in protecting the goal while halfbacks Amanda Rodriguez, Toffolo,Gattozzi, Pelosi and Hoynes-O’Connor excelled on both ends of the field. The line players Eve Rosenheck,Murphy, Allison Staniec and Nikki Hodulik were skillful in their passing and shooting.

The Gold rush’s next game against the Green Machine is a rematch of last fall’s championship.
